The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, has charged graduating students of the institution to take ownership of their future, describing their degree as a stepping stone rather than a destination.
Speaking at the 28th Convocation Ceremony held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 in Lagos, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated the graduands and urged them to see themselves as world-class students with the potential to create meaningful impact.
A total of 11,917 students graduated across diploma, first degree, and postgraduate programmes.
Of these, 971 earned Diplomas, 8,711 received First Degrees, including 192 with First Class Honours and 2,235 were awarded higher degrees, including Postgraduate Diplomas, Master’s, and Doctorates.
The best graduating student, Nwosu Isioma Sybil, finished with a CGPA of 4.93 in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Science.
According to her, Being world-class doesn’t mean you are a finished product, “It means you have a strong foundation, immense potential, and the drive to pursue excellence,” she said.
Professor Olatunji-Bello emphasized that earning a degree is only the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning, urging the graduates to continually invest in themselves.
“The biggest investment you can make is not in shares or gold, but in yourself,” she said, quoting Benjamin Franklin. She also advised them to define their own future rather than submit to uncertainty.
While commending the university’s staff and faculty for their role in nurturing the graduands, she reaffirmed LASU’s commitment to producing skilled manpower to meet the needs of Lagos State and Nigeria.
She expressed pride in the performance of LASU graduates in the workforce, noting that feedback from employers has been overwhelmingly positive.
