Sanwo-olu Lauds LASU Alumnis’ Loyalty As VC Appeals For Power Supply, Others

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has commended the members of the Alumni Association of the Lagos State University (LASU) for their Loyalty and remaining passionate over the continued growth and development of the university.

This is just as the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor IbiyemiIbilola Olatunji-Bello called on the Governor and Visitor to the University to assist in providing an Independent Power source for the University, increase in monthly subvention.

Sanwo-Olu made the commendation during his lecture at the 2021 Governor’s Lecture organised by LASU Alumni titled ‘Education Leadership and Technology as Viable Options for Economic Recovery and Nationhood: The Experience of Lagos State’ held Today at the Institution Premise in Lagos.

It would be recalled that Sanwo-Olu has approved the appointment of Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello as the 9th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU).

Sanwo-olu assured that his administration would work with the management and the Alumni to achieve the university’s desired growth and provide an enabling environment for the Institution to thrive.

“Let us be a university that is competitive, forward looking and can meet any university standard in the world that is what we are about to do and that is what we will do.

He revealed that the state government’s plan to turn a lot of the public schools in the state to comprehensive schools.

According to him, the intended transformation is geared towards early development of skills.

Not everyone has the opportunity to see the four walls of the university,we will be turning a lot of public schools to comprehensive schools so that they can develop themselves in other skills.”

In her welcome address, the said that the increase in monthly subvention and independent power supply will enable the University cater for other contingency needs, digitalization of the entire operations of the University and provision of Internet facility for the entire Campus.

The VC called for the support of the LASU Alumni Association towards achieving the six strategic goals of her administration.

She mentioned that the vision of her administration is anchored on a six- strategic goals; To ensure that Academic and Professional Programmes are and remain accredited by the relevant bodies, To make the University a research, innovation and development hub for Lagos State and National development, To ensure that infrastructural facilities are improved and readily available for seamless performance of Administrative and academic duties, To improve Internal Generation of Revenue with the aim of achieving financial sustainability of the university, To promote the welfare of all Staff and Students in the University and To promote participation in Sports and Recreational Activities.

“I seek the support of the LASU Alumni Association towards achieving these strategic goals. The Alumni Association is an asset. The views and positive statements that the Alumni Association presents in relation to the University through the media or other physical or social means provide support for the reputation of the University,” she said.

Bello commended the Governor for his support for the University by prompt release of monthly subvention for payment of salaries, immediate release of funds for accreditation , commencement of the construction of over Nine Thousand bed space students hostel on Ojo Campus and the release of additional four billion Naira to the 2022 University Budget.

“Mr Governor has also taken steps to renovate and revamp the Epe Campus of the University, unprecedented support of the Lagos State University College of Medicine and various ongoing projects across our Campuses.”

Speaking on the theme of the lecture, she said “e” is fitting at this critical time in our society. The theme aligns with our strategic goals.The importance of quality leadership and technology cannot be underestimated. Indeed, technology plays a major role in shaping our lives, interactions and operations.”

Also Speaking, the National President of the Alumni Association, Maj Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe who was represented by Norrison Quakers representing the National President thanked the Governor for overseeing a smooth transition from one Vice Chancellor to another in the University, he assured that the university’s Alumni will to work with the VC to achieve the institution’s dreams.
