The best graduating student of Lagos State University, 2023/2024 academic set, Cyril Nwosu Isioma Sybil, Nwosu, has recounted her emotional journey of rejection, resilience, and redemption in her pursuit for success.

Nwosu, who graduated with a cumulative grade point average of 4.93 from the department of biochemistry told her story while giving her valedictory speech at the LASU’s 28th convocation ceremony, revealed how she was devastated after missing admission to study Medicine at the University of Ibadan in 2019.

According to her, she was forced her to rewrite the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and eventually admitted to LASU to study Biochemistry, a course she had never imagined.

Nwosu said she initially felt like a failure. But over time, she found purpose and clarity in the new path. Anchoring her turnaround on faith, she said, “My heart broke a second time. But as Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, ‘For I know the plans I have for you…’ LASU was where God wanted me to be.”

Despite facing academic challenges, including a drop in her CGPA that left her in tears, Nwosu persevered, graduating with a CGPA of 4.93. She credited her success to the unwavering support of her lecturers, her mother, and close friends who reminded her of her brilliance when she doubted herself.

She also highlighted her ambition to transition into the tech space, pursuing further studies in bioinformatics and data science. “The world is evolving, and so must we,” she said.

Aside from academic excellence, Nwosu served as the 33rd Speaker of the Department of Biochemistry, proving her leadership abilities.

A total of 10,183 students graduated at the 28th convocation, with 282 earning First Class degrees, including Sybil.
