A University Don and Professor in the department of Human Kinetics, Sports and Health Education, Faculty of Education, Lagos State University (LASU), Mrs Idowu, Bidemi Bilkis has urged federal government to make cervical cancer screening more affordable and accessible to young female adults in order to ensure sexual wellbeing.

Professor Bilkis made this case while delivering a paper on the theme “Sexuality: The Savour, The Caution, The Pleasure” at the Lagos State University 69th Inaugural Lecture Series, Tuesday held in Lagos.

A study by kowiu-Kazeem and Idowu (2018), on factors influencing cervical cancer screening among young mother’s in Ikeja showed that the women do not have knowledge of cervical cancer and are not favourably disposed to cervical cancer screening. This she said, buttress the fact that young girls should be better informed about cervical cancer screening and have vaccination done at a tender age.

According to LASU 69th Inaugural Lecturer, sexuality is not always based on sex but is rather premised on the comprehensive sexual nature of human.

“Sexuality should not be viewed as an albatross of relationships but must be seen as desirable for humanity,” she said.

The mother of five urged Buhari’s administration to make policies on sexuality to further strengthen the laws on child abuse.

“Government agents in charge should be bold enough to implement the law in order to checkmate the spread of sexual abuse,” she urged.

Speaking on Dating, Prof. Bilkis opined that both parties should provide their own transportation when going for a date, meet in a safe environment, don’t leave food or drink unattended, limit alcohol consumption to mention but a few.

She prayed the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun SAN to expand the counselling unit of the varsity beyond career and academic matters to include issues encompassing family life and sexuality.
