PDP Set For Protest Against Presidential Election Result As APC Alerts Security Agencies

Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set for a landmark peaceful protest Monday, against the outcome of the Presidential election held 25 February, 2023.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had declared the candidate of ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner and President- elect.

The result had received condemnation by the PDP and the Labour Party which lays claim to have won the election.

Senator Dino Melaye, in a tweet summoning all PDP members and lovers of democracy wrote “All lovers of Democracy are invited to a peaceful protest march tomorrow Monday at 10am. We will converge at Legacy House before MTN office Maitama. Everyone is expected to wear black on black. In an unjust society, silence is a crime. Lets save our Democracy. SDM”.

But this has not gone well with APC which had subsequently invited security agencies to scuttle the protest.

According to Femi Fani-Kayode in a subsequent tweet, “The PDP’s protest march scheduled for tomorrow in Abuja is a dangerous precursor to something more sinister. They wish to incite the people & destabilise the nation. The security agencies should take note & stop this nonsense before things get out of hand & people are killed.

“…How can you be in court and be protesting in the streets at the same time? @officialABAT has extended his hand in good faith for peace. He has invited them to the table of fellowship and leadership but in their destructive wrath and blind rage they have rejected it.

“We lose no sleep over their childish tantrums and empty threats. Whatever they are planning we are ready for them. Make no mistake about it: whatever it takes and whether it be in the street, the courts or elsewhere, we WILL defend our mandate.”
