The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has intensified its enforcement against illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment, unauthorised data modification and extortion, leading to several arrests and the seizure of illegal enrolment equipment during a recent operation in Gwagwalada and other locations.
The Commission, through its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU), said the operation underscores its determination to eliminate unauthorised enrolment activities and unethical practices while safeguarding the integrity, security and credibility of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.
NIMC warned that many challenges experienced by NIN holders arise from the use of unapproved agents and the circumvention of official enrolment procedures, according to a statement by Dr Kayode Adegoke, Head, Corporate Communications.
The Commission emphasised that NIN enrolment can only be conducted at approved NIMC centres, while data modifications should be carried out through the official self-service modification portal.
To enhance security and access to services, NIMC advised NIN holders to download the NINAuth application from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store. The app provides added protection for NIN records, enables NIN slip printing and offers other security-related benefits.
Speaking on the issue, NIMC Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reaffirmed the Commission’s zero-tolerance stance on extortion and unethical conduct, stressing its commitment to providing seamless and hitch-free NIN enrolment services for Nigerians and legal residents.
The Commission urged applicants and existing NIN holders to use only NIMC-approved channels for enrolment and related services. It also encouraged the public to obtain information through its official website, www.nimc.gov.ng, verified social media platforms, or its toll-free line, 0800 0616 462.
