The Asagba of Asaba, Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, has congratulated Godfrey Odogwu on his confirmation and inauguration as Deputy Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

Odogwu’s appointment was confirmed during a meeting of the Global Executive Council of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation held in Enugu.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the monarch described Odogwu as a worthy and capable leader, saying his elevation was a fitting recognition of his leadership qualities, commitment to community service, and dedication to the advancement of the Igbo nation.

Azinge noted that the appointment was not only a personal achievement for Odogwu but also a source of pride for the Asaba Kingdom and Delta State. He expressed confidence that Odogwu’s experience in administration, management, entrepreneurship, and community leadership would contribute significantly to the effectiveness of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

The monarch said Odogwu had consistently demonstrated exemplary leadership through his contributions to the development of Asaba, earning widespread respect across different sectors of society.

He urged the newly appointed Deputy Secretary-General to remain committed to promoting unity, peace, justice, and the collective aspirations of Ndigbo worldwide, while serving with integrity, humility, and dedication.

Azinge also offered prayers for divine wisdom, good health, and strength for Odogwu as he assumes the responsibilities of his new office.

The Asagba further commended Dr. Ngozi Olejeme for nominating Odogwu for the position, describing her as a committed advocate of both the Asaba and Ohanaeze causes. He praised her contributions to the socio-cultural organisation and expressed confidence that, with her support and collaboration with stakeholders, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide would continue to grow.

Speaking on Asaba’s relationship with the Igbo nation, the monarch said the community had never denied its Igbo links.

“I am still part of Ohanaeze Ndigbo because I belong to Imeobi. I am happy, and I am sure that this is a great advantage for the Asaba people. We do not deny our Igbo identity, but our ancestry is not Igbo; it is Igala,” Azinge stated.

He explained that years of interaction with neighbouring Igbo communities across the River Niger had fostered strong cultural ties. He also highlighted the involvement of notable Asaba sons and daughters in Ohanaeze affairs over the years, including Dennis Osadebay, Chike Edozien, Ogbueshi Ejiofor Onyia, and Dr. Olejeme.

The monarch encouraged Asaba indigenes to continue supporting Ohanaeze Ndigbo, particularly in efforts aimed at promoting the development of communities linked to the Igbo race.

Earlier, Dr. Olejeme praised the monarch for what she described as his transformative leadership since ascending the throne. She explained that the position of Deputy Secretary-General became vacant following the death of Chief Dan Okenyi, prompting consultations that led to Odogwu’s nomination and subsequent inauguration.

She also commended the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, John Azuta-Mbata, the Deputy President-General, Okechukwu Nwadinobi, and the Secretary-General, Emeka Sibeudu, for their leadership and support in strengthening the organisation.

According to her, the successful nomination, screening, and inauguration of Odogwu reflected the commitment of the organisation’s leadership to effective representation and service.

In his remarks, Odogwu expressed gratitude to Dr. Olejeme for nominating him for the office and pledged to serve with commitment and a strong sense of purpose.

He assured the monarch and the Asaba community that he would discharge his responsibilities diligently, particularly in matters relating to the development of Asaba and the advancement of the Igbo nation.

Odogwu, who has been designated for the prestigious Olinzele title of Asaba, brings extensive experience in banking, management, entrepreneurship, and consultancy, qualities expected to enhance the administrative and organisational effectiveness of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide in its mission to promote the interests of Ndigbo across the globe.
