Five persons have been reported dead and four others rescued in a fresh boat accident in Jigawa state.
The incident happened at Martaba village Gwaram government area while the passengers were returning home after attending Juma’at prayers.
The spokesman of the state Police Command, DSP Lawan Shisu Adam, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday said the incident occurred at about 7:00 pm on Friday, September 2.
Coming barely one week after similar boat conveying nine farmers capsized in Miga local government of the state killing two persons, while seven others were rescued.
The statement said, “On Friday, 2nd September, 2022, at about 1900hrs, a locally made canoe conveying nine passengers was reported to have capsized.
“On receipt of the report, a team of Policemen were rushed to the scene.
“With the aid of local divers, five corpses were recovered. They included those of Lukateru, 60; Musa 50; Sale 50; Alhaji Shuaibu 60 and Dogo, 50 all of Darazau Herdsmen settlement camp in Bauchi State.
“Four of the passengers; one Barkeji 60 years of age and three others, all of Martaba village were, however, rescued alive.”
The police spokesman said the corpses were released to their relatives for burial.
“The State commissioner of police Aliyu Sale Tafida condoles with the family and relatives. He also prays for the departed souls to have eternal peace.”
