A Call for Public Awareness on Third-Party Motor Insurance Enforcement

As the enforcement of the Third-Party Motor Insurance policy takes effect, concerns have emerged over misunderstandings between motorists and law enforcement officers.

Many vehicle owners, particularly those with comprehensive insurance, have reported being wrongly asked to obtain third-party coverage despite already meeting legal insurance requirements.

The enforcement, which began on February 1, 2025, mandates that all motorists carry at least a third-party motor insurance policy.

While this policy provides indemnity against legal liabilities for death, injury, and property damage to third parties, comprehensive insurance offers broader coverage, including own-vehicle damage, theft, and fire incidents.

However, reports indicate that some officers fail to recognize comprehensive policies, leading to confusion and frustration among policyholders.

Segun Bankole, Chairman of the Corporate Affairs Committee of the Nigerian Insurers Association (CAMCONIA) and Head of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations at Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc, has stressed the need for better public education on the enforcement.

He noted that educating both motorists and law enforcement officers is essential to preventing unnecessary disputes and ensuring smooth implementation.

“There have been complaints from some motorists about the manner in which the enforcement is being carried out. These concerns need to be addressed to avoid any form of misunderstanding between motorists and law enforcement officers across the country,” he said.

The collaboration between the Nigerian Police Force and the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) in enforcing compliance has been welcomed as a step toward strengthening the insurance industry and enhancing public trust.

However, calls for more enlightenment continue, as ensuring proper understanding of the policy will help motorists comply while protecting lives and property on Nigerian roads.
