The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates in Nigeria will take place from Thursday, April 24 to Friday, June 20, 2025.
This year’s edition marks a significant milestone, as WAEC introduces a computer-based format for some subjects, the first in the history of the exam for school candidates.
The Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, made this known while speaking to newsmen, Thursday in Lagos.
He stated that the Council is taking a major step towards integrating modern Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into its operations, in line with the Federal Ministry of Education’s vision and the National Policy on Education.
“As an organisation that believes in using technology to improve service delivery, WAEC has introduced the maiden Computer-Based WASSCE (CB-WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2025,” Dr. Dangut said.
He explained that under the new system, no two candidates will receive the same set of questions in the same order, as part of the Council’s effort to promote academic integrity and curb examination malpractice.
According to him, a total of 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools are expected to sit for the examination nationwide. This figure reflects an increase of 158,627 candidates compared to the previous year. Of the total, 979,228 are male (49.63%) and 994,025 are female (50.37%), indicating a continued rise in female participation.
Candidates will be examined in 74 subjects, made up of 196 papers. Over 26,000 senior secondary school teachers nominated by various State Ministries of Education will serve as supervisors.
Regarding the use of the National Identification Number (NIN), Dr. Dangut clarified that while it was part of the registration requirements, it was not made compulsory during the initial phase to facilitate smooth access to the portal. Schools were, however, required to upload their candidates’ NINs before the close of registration, and no student was disqualified for failing to provide it at the outset.
The Council also reiterated its commitment to the timely release of results and certificates.
“As is our tradition, the results will be released 45 days after the last paper, and certificates will be printed and dispatched to schools in under 90 days. Candidates will also have access to digital copies of their certificates through the Digital Certificate platform,” the HNO added.
On the issue of security, Dr. Dangut acknowledged past challenges, including specific threats recorded during last year’s exam in certain geopolitical zones.
However, he assured that adequate arrangements have been made in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and state governments to ensure a smooth and safe conduct of the 2025 examination.
