Vice President Sen. Kashim Shettima has stressed for politicians to avoid bastardizing the traditional institutions, given their roles as the links to the past.
The vice president who gave the admonition while commissioning a Jummat mosque built and donated by his Foundation to the Gumel Emirate Council in Jigawa state as part of the activities marking the 45th anniversary of the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani on Friday.
Sen. Shettima, who also lauded the agricultural revolution of the state government singled out Governor Umar Namadi as an example of the face of the present administration’s agricultural transformation agenda, who must be copied by other governors in the north.
According to the VP, “We have come to celebrate the Emir of Gumel who has clocked 45 years on the throne of his forefathers and we wish him more years of service to his people.”
“The traditional institutions are our links to the past and therefore, we must jealously guard and protect the institution because doing otherwise would spell doom for our heritage.”
Reviewing the activities of Governor Namadi, Shettima said, “Here’s the governor who has cultivated more than 105 hectares of wheat so he is worthy of commendation.
His words, “The governor of Jigawa is first among equals when it comes to agriculture. He’s been at the vanguard of agricultural transformation in the northern part of the country.
“He understands the dynamics and he the as expended resources towards seeing that the his people are empowered and this is part of the reason why Jigawa has remained an island of f peace and stability in an ocean of instability.
“So he deserves to be commended, he deserves to be celebrated and to be fair to other governors, they all doing their best when compared to my cohorts, I think this present crop of governors are some of the best we’ve ever had in the contemporary history of this country.
” So, we urge him remain steadfast, continue on his commitment, his zeal, his passion for transforming Jigawa into a model state.”
The VP was accompanied by an array of dignitaries including the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, the Chairman of the Senate Committee of North West Development Commission Babangida Hussain, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Saad Abubakar, his Damagaram counterpart from Niger Republic, Elh. Aboubacar Salman, the Emir of Hadejia and chairman Jigawa state traditional council, Alhaji Adamu Maje.
