The Senate Committee on Power has commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for the various on going transmission projects meant to enhance power availability to Nigerians.
The committee led by its Chairman, Senator Gabriel Suswam, gave the commendation while on oversight function on inspection tour of two on going TCN projects located at Wuye and Apo districts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, on Tuesday.
The Committee members were conducted round the project sites by TCN top official, Engr. Victor Adewumi.
At the Transmission Substation under construction at Apo, Senator Suswam explained that the oversight was meant to ensure that the projects are on going and would be completed within the given timeframe.
According to him, “The essence of the oversight is to monitor and make sure that we are satisfied with what the TCN is doing. And to ensure a seamless power delivery not only in Abuja but also in the whole country
“At least now, we are satisfied that the projects are on going and the period given, we will be able to meet up with the Two years completion period.
“These are foreign funded projects and all we need to do is to make sure that the project is on going. It is a foreign funded project and not through appropriation and with that, we believe that there won’t be any problem.”
The project is a 330KV substation, one of the five major on going substation projects under EFD loan from French.
After the construction, the DisCos will have no excuse that they couldn’t connect light because the substation has nine feeders they can connect from.
Earlier at Apo substation under construction, Engr. Mrs Jane Okemili, project manager of one the EFD project feeding scheme in Abuja, explained the essence of the project.
She said: “The essence of the project is to bring in a third feeding points into Abuja and it is coming from Lafia straight down to this substation under construction.
“From here we are going to have three out going lines, one to Apo, one to Kuje and the third line is going Lokogoma. So, after the project, Abuja will be on ring at 132KV level.
“What I mean by being on ring is that it gives us flexibility in service delivery. It will make it possible for us to move from one line to another if a problem occurs in any of the lines. At the end of the project, Abuja will be on supply 24/7 hours.”
