Security Operatives Abort Impeachment Of Jigawa State Assembly Speaker

The police and operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) in Jigawa state on Tuesday took over the State Assembly complex to avert what they called attempt to cause breakdown of law and order in the state.

The move followed alleged plan by members of the assembly to impeach their speaker Haruna Aliyu Dangyantin  during its extra ordinary sitting on Tuesday.

The Spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Lawan Shisu Adam, who confirmed the unusually heavy presence of policemen at the assembly complex told reporters that the police had received intelligence report of attempt by some individuals to cause breakdown of law and order. But he did not name the affected individuals.

Report  has it that, some aggrieved members began the impeachment process on the speaker on  allegation high-handedness and personalization of the running of the House  affairs as well poor leadership.

investigations also revealed that, the aggrieved members have got the support of the majority of the assembly members for the impeachment which they termed as  ” Crusade for Liberation Of Jigawa Assembly”.

It also gathered that, crusade has created tension in state capital as most of the state political actors are  very scared on the political consequences of the move

The move to impeach the speaker is happening when the speaker is on foreign trip to Saudi Arabia along with state governor Malam Umar Namadi with mission to woo investors from the oil rich country.

The combined team of the police and civil defence  corps, which were deployed to assembly had barred any person including the assembly staff from entering the house premises.

The Police spokesman maintained however that the unusual presence of  security at the assembly was because  police had received an intelligence  report on a movement hat may cause the breach of public peace and stability around the area, in view of that, they increase the presence of security as a proactive measures.

Speaking under the condition of anonymity, one of the senior staff of the assembly confirmed that, when he got to the assembly gate in the early morning hours he was denied access to  his office despite presenting his  identty card to the security who blocked the Assembly entrance.

However it was speculated that, the aggrieved members want use the impeachment threat as a bargaining chip for  their political interest.
