President Muhammadu Buhari has declined for the second time, in two subsequent requests by South East leaders, for the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Elder Statesman Mbazulike Amaechi, a First Republic Minister of Aviation, had last year led a delegation of Igbo elders to a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa Abuja to request for Kanu’s release.
The second time the request was made by South East traditional, religious and political leaders during a Town Hall meeting with Buhari while on two-day visit in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, on Friday
While he noted that the request was a difficult one for him to grant, he however assured that he will give it consideration while responding at the presidential villa in the first instance.
But while responding in Ebonyi state, he said: “I have listened carefully to the various appeals from the elders to the traditional leaders regarding wide range of options.
“As I have said previously this matter remains in the full purview of the courts where it will be properly adjudicated”.
“My worry is for our hardworking and innocent civilians, for whom life is already tough and would like to earn a decent and honest living’, Buhari said.
He frowned at the brutal activities of terrorists in the South-East and other parts of the country.
He reiterated the commitment of his administration to continue to protect and defend innocent citizens from those bent on causing breakdown of law and order across the country.
He also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the region, reiterating his directive to security agencies to flush out those perpetrating violence in the land.
