The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, (NIPR) Tuesday named the Jigawa state governor, Umar Namadi as the patron of the Jigawa state chapter of the Institute.
At the occasion, the governor was also presented with the Diamond Prize for Excellence in Food Security in appreciation of his transformative agricultural programnes aimed at enhancing food security in the state.
In his speech at the investiture of the governor at the Ahmadu Bello Hall, Dutse, the state capital, the President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Institute, Dr.Ike Neliaku, who led other Council Members of the Institute, said the recognition was in appreciation of the governor’s efforts in enhancing food security, not only for the people of the state, the country and beyond.
In addition, the Council of the Institute plans to institute the NIPR Umar Namadi Prize to the best graduating student in Mass Communication at the recently state government acquired Khadija University Majia as a means of celebrating excellence.
He also hinted that the Council plans to establish a Centre of Excellence in Development and Agricultural Communication in one of the universities in the state. This is aimed pushing out the right information about the positive activities that are taking place in the agricultural sector being spear headed by the governor.
He said, when established, he said the institute would partner with the selected institution to train those who be skilled in communicating the revolution taking place in agriculture being spear headed by the governor
“The reason being simple, Jigawa is an agrarian state and you’re making alot of efforts to feed, not just Nigeria, you can feed the West Africa; you can feed Africa you can feed the entire world.
“Therefore, we don’t want to be like winking in the dark, so we want this your great efforts to be pushed out, but you know we cannot do it alone because we’re not always in Jigawa state.”
The NIPR boss said the decision to was in consonance with the relevant Act establishing the Institute, which makes the governor of a state the patron of that state chapter and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as grand patron.
In his acceptance speech Namadi dedicated Diamond Award to the people of Jigawa particularly the small- and large-Scale farmers and all other stakeholders directly contributing to our success stories in our agricultural transformation Agenda.
“It is their resilience, hard work, and commitment to the common good that has made these achievements possible. I assure you that our administration will continue to place the welfare of our people at the forefront of our policies and initiatives.”
Namadi described the award as recognition of the modest achievements being recorded by his administration in the sector saying it would go a long in spurring him and his team to do more to make the state the number destination in the area of commercial agriculture in the country.
Highlight of the investiture of the governor was the presentation of a certificate, a plaque and a cash prize of N 250,000.
