The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the callous murder of Mrs. Fatima Abubakar and her six children in order to bring the perpetrators to face the law.
This is even as the Commission expressed deep shock and sadness over the horrific attack which claimed the lives of Mrs. Fatima Abubakar and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano State, on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
NHRC recalled media reports that unknown assailants broke into the victims home, brutally murdered them with dangerous weapons, and threw an infant into a well.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN who lamented over the brutal murder, observed that the barbaric act is not only a crime against humanity but also a grave violation of the fundamental right to life guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and international human rights instruments to which Nigeria is a party.
According to him, “The Commission strongly condemns this heinous crime and calls on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators swiftly to justice. Such acts of violence must not be allowed to fester in our communities, and impunity must never be tolerated.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the victims, the people of Dorayi Chiranchi, and the entire Kano State. The NHRC stands in solidarity with them during this time of immense grief”, the Executive Secretary said.
Further NHRC reiterated its unwavering commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights in Nigeria, assuring its readiness to collaborate with the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the incident is thoroughly investigated and culprits brought to book to ensure that the rights of every person living in Nigeria is protected in accordance with the law.
Ojukwu also called for the collaboration of all stakeholders to uphold the sanctity of human life and foster a society where peace, justice, and respect for human dignity prevail.
