Katsina Govt. Adopts Jigawa’s Model Of Subsidized Food Stores System

The Katsina state has vowed to adopt the Jigawa state model of making food items readily available to the people of the state through establishment of subsidized food stores system.

This forms part of its determination to address the current economic challenges facing its citizens occasioned by the rising cost of food items.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda explained that it would be achieved through the establishment of controlled food items stores, where less privileged populace would be offered the opportunity of purchasing the materials at subsidized rates.

The governor, who made the plans to establish the stores, known locally as Kantin Sauki while unveiling the Jigawa version, at the weekend, believed that the initiative would lessen the burden of getting food items on majority of the people, who are less privileged.

Accompanied by the host governor, Umar Namadi, Radda said the decision to adopt the system was inspired by a successful take off of the programme in Jigawa , which aims to provide essential commodities and foodstuffs to the public at subsidized prices.

Radda expressed his enthusiasm for the project, “I was able to see the system and the kind of people benefiting from it.

“This visit serves as a study tour to understand the technicalities, and I’ve already directed my special adviser to study the system for implementation in Katsina State.”

Radda, who also chairs the Northwest Governors’ Forum, commended the development initiatives of under Namadi’s leadership.

“Katsina has a lot to learn from the well-thought-out development programmes of Governor Namadi,” he remarked.

“As a government, we shall do everything possible to reduce the level of suffering among our people.”

“The Kantin Sauki initiative in Jigawa State, which has already launched in Ringim and Kafin Hausa Local Government Areas, features a sustainable supply system and innovative payment methods.

“These include customized ATMs and POS machines, allowing for a 30% subsidy on purchases, with civil servants and pensioners able to pay in installments.”

Governor Radda emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in addressing shared challenges.

“The Northwest governors are collectively addressing economic issues, security concerns, and agricultural development in a holistic manner,” he stated.

This collaborative approach underscores the commitment to finding sustainable solutions to the region’s pressing issues.
