The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, (JAMB) has identified lack of preparedness in the paths of students and assessors as some of the factors responsible for mass failure in public examinations in the country.
The Director of Psychometric in the Board, Dr Ariyo Akinyele, stated this during an interview at the opening of weeklong critical assessment competency training of 180, teachers lecturers in Dutse, Jigawa state on Tuesday.
The JAMB official said that the gesture was to enhance the capacity of the participants, drawn from various tertiary institutions and secondary schools, in order to be good enough in assessing Nigerian students.
According to the director, “Studies have indicated that many of our students are failing examinations, not necessarily these students are not intelligent, the assessors themselves have problem.
“So when they do the right thing you find that there will be improvement, the students will improve in their results.
“Therefore, this training is for none-education lecturers or teachers that find themselves teaching in tertiary institutions or secondary schools.
“We have to train them about assessment, we are looking at critical assessment competency because one should be competent in assessment.
“So they are trained to be good teachers and good assessors of our students,” Akinyele said.
He lamented that, being what Nigeria is, many people who could not secure a job, decided to opt for teaching at secondary or tertiary level.
This, the director said does not portray good picture of the country, hence the decision by the board to train such category of lecturers and teachers in critical assessment of students.
“At the end of the exercise we expect that the capacity of the participants would be built on good assessment criterion.”
