The Enugu State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to using insurance as a strategic tool for protecting public assets, finances, and citizen welfare, declaring that the sector is too important to be treated as a mere administrative formality.
Speaking on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government, Bar. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, a representative of the government welcomed industry leaders, regulators, and practitioners to the 2025 IICC Compulsory Insurance Training which took place recently in Enugu.
The event was organized by the Insurance Industry Consultative Council (IICC) to strengthen the capacity of public institutions in understanding and implementing compulsory insurance across the country.
In his address, the SSG stated that Enugu’s approach to insurance is deliberate and strategic, designed to build resilience and safeguard the state’s long-term development goals.
He noted that compulsory insurance is central to protecting public structures, budgets, and the everyday lives of citizens.
He highlighted the compulsory enrollment of all civil servants into the Enugu State Universal Health Coverage Scheme as a practical example of the state’s commitment. The initiative, he said, ensures that every worker has access to quality healthcare, thereby protecting families while reducing the financial burden of medical emergencies on government resources.
According to him, the scheme reflects the preventive logic at the heart of insurance—mitigating risk before it becomes crisis.
The government praised the IICC for prioritizing human capacity development and for bringing the training to Enugu, describing the state as a growing hub for ideas, enterprise, and collaboration. He encouraged civil servants participating in the programme to engage deeply, ask questions, and translate the lessons into actionable policies that strengthen risk management across public institutions.
He also invited guests to explore the hospitality and heritage of Enugu, describing the city as vibrant, safe, and full of cultural richness.
Declaring the programme open on behalf of the Governor and the people of Enugu State, he reaffirmed the government’s belief that strong systems are built through knowledgeable people, clear standards, and consistent practice.
He added that citizens expect institutions that anticipate risk and plan ahead, and that compulsory insurance remains one of the most effective tools for achieving this expectation.
