House of Representatives Mourns Loss of COAS, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, Extends Condolences To Nigerian Armed Forces

The House of Representatives has expressed deep sadness over the passing of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who tragically passed away late Tuesday at the age of 56.

The House extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces; the Defence Headquarters, Nigerian Army, the people, and government of Osun State, and all Nigerians during this momentous loss.

“Lt. Gen. Lagbaja will be remembered for his unwavering dedication and significant contributions to the service of our great nation. Notably, his participation in the inaugural edition of the House’s Sectoral Debate on Security in November 2023 demonstrated his deep commitment to addressing the challenges facing the Army and ensuring its successes under his leadership”, according to a statement by Rep. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, expressed shock at the demise of the Army Chief, describing it as a monumental loss to both the Armed Forces and the entire country.

Eulogising the late Lt. Gen. Lagbaja as “a gallant military officer,” Speaker Abbas highlighted his dogged spirit and determination in defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and making the country safer for all.

Before his appointment as Chief of Army Staff in June 2023, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja served in various prestigious roles, including Deputy Chief of Staff G1 at Headquarters 81 Division, Commanding Officer of the 72 Special Forces Battalion, and Chief of Staff at Headquarters 8 Task Force Division.

His extensive military career also saw him serving as Director of Operations at the Army Headquarters and as General Officer Commanding several divisions.

A distinguished officer, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja made vital contributions to numerous military operations across Nigeria, including Operation HARMONY IV in the Bakassi Peninsula, Operation ZAKI in Benue State, and Operation LAFIYA DOLE.

He also played a significant role in international peacekeeping efforts, notably with the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo from 2004 to 2005.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s leadership was instrumental in the recent successes against banditry and terrorism in various regions of the country.

His legacy, particularly his modest but impactful achievements in a short period as the Chief of Army Staff, will continue to resonate in the years to come.
