Ghana Delegation Visits Nigeria for Insights into Cargo Insurance Operations

A delegation from Ghana’s Cargo Technical Committee on Tuesday paid a study visit to the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) in Lagos, as part of efforts to deepen understanding of Nigeria’s cargo insurance framework and explore collaborative opportunities.

According to a statement signed by the Head Corporate Communication/Brand Management, Ajoke Adeyemi, the visiting team, comprising representatives from key Ghanaian institutions such as the National Insurance Commission (NIC), Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Ghana Insurance Association (GIA), and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS), was received at the Insurers House, Victoria Island by NIA’s Director-General, Mrs. Bola Odukale, alongside senior officials of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) led by Dr. Julius Odidi, Head of NAICOM’s Lagos Control Office, and executives of the NIA Marine Offices Committee (NIA-MOC).

Led by Mr. Fred Asiedu-Darteh of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, the Ghanaian delegation is on a study tour aimed at gaining insights into the workings of Nigeria’s compulsory cargo insurance policy including operational structures, challenges, regulatory enforcement, and market impact.

Discussions during the engagement focused on the intricacies of marine and cargo insurance, with both parties exchanging ideas, experiences, and policy approaches.

The meeting also explored areas of mutual interest and potential collaboration between the two countries in promoting effective cargo insurance practices within the West African region.

Members of the Ghanaian delegation included Mrs. Gertrude Adwoa Ohene-Asienim of Whitestone Shipbrokers Ghana Ltd., Mrs. Mercy Naa Koshie Boampong of Serene Insurance Company Ltd., Mr. Nutekpor Emmanuel of the Ghana Revenue Authority, and Mr. Mawuli Zogbenu of Ghana’s National Insurance Commission.

The visit marks another step towards strengthening regional cooperation in maritime insurance and trade facilitation.
