Holy Ghost College, Owerri, (HOGOSCO) Old Boys Association, has commenced the construction of a multi-million Naira sports pavilion complex in the school.
Confirming this development during the school’s 75th anniversary, the National President of the Association, Dr. Anslem Opara, said: “The Sport Pavilion Project is a signature initiative by the Class of 1998, aimed at constructing a state-of-the-art sports complex for the College.
“The project will provide a modern and safe sporting facility for students, staff, and the wider community, to promote physical education, health, and well-being of all.
“When completed, the facilities will include a standard football field, sitting capacity of over 100 spectators, covered sitting area, press box, commentary booth, scoreboard and floodlight.
“The sports complex will also boast of a boxing gym. There will be a training area with punching bags and mats, a boxing ring, changing rooms and showers, as well as an equipment storage room.”
Answering another question, Dr. Opara said that some additional features in the complex will include, but not limited to access roads and walkways, landscaping and drainage, security lighting and close circuit television cameras, first aid and medical room, as well as snacks bar refreshment area.
While saying that the project’s expected completion time and handover will be December 2025, Dr. Opara also disclosed that the complex will be funded through donations, sponsorships, and fundraising efforts.
Opara said: “The project will be managed by a committee comprising representatives from the Class of 98, college administration, external experts in sports facility management and construction.
“The Sport Complex was designed and currently being constructed with sustainability in mind. We have incorporated eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and rainwater harvesting in the project.
“We cannot forget that this institution has produced football legends like Elkana Onyeali, Patrick Ekeji, Obed Ariri, Cletus Onyenokporo, Okey Isime, Nwankwo Kanu, Emmanuel Merenini, Uche Okafor and a host of others that played for football clubs and Nigeria.
“Indeed, Holy Ghost College, Owerri, Sport Pavilion Project will remain a lasting legacy for the College and generations yet unborn.”
