Another Pipeline Explosion In Imo Kills Four, Two Seriously Wounded As Farmlands Razed, Says NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has disclosed the occurrence of another pipeline explosion at the site of illegal exploration at Awara, Ohaji/Egbema local government, Imo State, killing at least four, wounding two as farmlands were razed.

NEMA in its X handle, recalled that it was barely one week after an explosion claimed many lives at Obitti, that the latest explosion occured at Awara on the 14th February, 2024 in the same Local Council Area.

According to NEMA, the officials of NEMA Owerri Operations Office led by Mr. Nweze Innocent (ACSARO) and the Disaster Response Unit (34 Bde Artillery) Nigerian Army Obinze led by Lts M,A Haruna and S, A Isong were at the site of the explosion for on the spot assessment.

The agency quoted the President General of Awara community at the site, Chief Nze London as saying that “heat from a timber fully loaded Diana truck that was passing-by is suspected as the possible trigger factor”.

The explosion resulted to a serious fire that engulfed the whole of the areas affecting people’s farms including about 4 dead, 2 hospitalized and the Diana truck partially burnt.
