Four women and a toddler have reportedly lost their lives, when a canoe capsized in a local river in Guri local government area of Jigawa state.
Reports had it that, the incident occurred at exactly 4:30pm when the women and a child boarded a canoe from Nguru local government area in Yobe state to Adiyani village in Guri LGA of Jigawa State.
The canoe capsized close to their destination. Eye witness account, however, blamed the development on the overflowing of the river as a result of the recent heavy downpour experienced across the state.
The state police command, which confirmed the incident said paddler of canoe escaped alive, while the passengers were drowned. Local divers immediately entered into the river for their rescue.
The spokesman of the command, DSP Lawan Shisu Adam said three corpses were recovered on the spot: Later, the remaining two corpses were recovered.
He revealed the identities of the victims as follows: Oneyaniwura Kasagama, 50; Lafiya Mallam Bulama, 40 and Mai Madu Mallam Bulama 7months-old.
Others included Badejaka Kasagama and Gimto Kasagama, both aged 40-years-old, all of Adiyani village.
Their corpses were later taken to Adiyani Primary Health Centre, (PHC), where they were certified dead, adding that the incident was under investigation by the police.
