A 28-year-old man, identified as Umar A. Sale has been reported burled alive in Majia community in Taura local government area in Jigawa state.
Reports from the area on Wednesday, as confirmed by the State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC), indicated that the incident occurred on Tuesday at about 2:00 pm.
The spokesman of the Corps, Adamu Shehu, in a statement on Wednesday said, Sale, a father of three, was digging sand from a ditch, about three kilometres away from the town to fix his mud house, which, was partly destroyed by the heavy downpour recently experienced when the sand above him slide and buried him alive.
According to him, “His first cry for help was heard by some people farming around the area and rushed to his rescue. Unfortunately, he died at the spot because of the weight of the sand and his inability to breathe.
“His body was recovered and thereafter released to his family for proper burial.”
Shehu confirmed that the incident was not the first of it’s type to occur in the same ditch, noting that, there were recorded cases of similar deaths in the past,.
“As such the community residents are advised in their best interest to refrain from extracting or digging sand from the ditch.”
