The Youth Sports Federation has approved the participation of the TAICO Sports Academy, a part of Thomas Adewumi International College, Oko, Kwara State, to represent Nigeria in an international youth football tournament in Denmark.

The Dana Cup 2022 is for category ‘B’ players born after January 1, 2008.

The YSFON revealed this in a letter to the TSA Chairman, Dr Johnson Adewumi, dated December 13, 2021, titled ‘International championship for 2022,’ and signed by YSFON National Secretary, Patrick Okpavuerhe.

The commitee asked the management to submit before March 7, the international passports of the players; evidence of payment of N300,000 non-refundable administrative charges; a letter of intent from the state government or corporate bodies, and evidence of payment of affiliation fees.

It read in part, “The National Executive Council of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria wishes to congratulate you for the wonderful performance of your state team, Thomas Adewumi International College, at the just concluded Chief of the Naval Staff Cup U-14 boys soccer tournament in Abuja.

“The Central Working Committee of YSFON, after due consideration, has given approval for your team to participate in an international youth soccer tournament in Denmark (Dana Cup 2022) for category ‘B’ players born after January 1, 2008.

“To avoid delay in processing your team’s travelling documents and for your official registration for the tournament, you are requested to submit the following to the national headquarters of YSFON on or before March 7, 2022.”

Commenting on the invitation, the TSA founder described it as a dream fulfilled, adding that he picked the boys from the streets and sponsored their education.

He said the players had won a number of state and national soccer awards, noting that the Denmark tourney would enable them to showcase their talents abroad.

Adewumi said, “I have been single-handedly responsible for financing their education, sports training, medicals and competitions since September 2017 when they were about nine to 10 years. They have won several awards at state and national levels. Now they will have the opportunity to showcase their talent abroad. It is gratifying.

“My expectation is that God will bring other people to support this sports academy and contribute financially to help these boys to achieve their goal of becoming elite players and one day, win medals for Nigeria.”
