At least, two people have been confirmed dead, five persons in critical condition while six people are still missing in a fresh canoe mishap in Ringim local government council of Jigawa state.
The council chairman, Shehu Sule Udi confirmed the incident to newsmen on Monday in Dutse.
He said the incident occurred on Sunday evening while 13 passengers were on their way back on a condolence visit from Dabi to Siyango villages in Ringim.
Udi said the bodies of seven out of the thirteen victims were recovered while the remaining six were still missing at press time.
But the spokesman of Jigawa state police command DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, who confirmed the incident, however, gave a different figures on the number of casualties of the incident.
In a statement he said the search and rescue mission was launched with the assistance of local divers and seven people were recovered while the remaining six are still missing.
“Two out of the seven recovered victims were confirmed dead by a medical doctor and the five are in critical condition and still receiving medical attention while the remaining six still missing”
He said preliminary investigation revealed that the canoe hit an object and broke down, as a result, all the occupants drowned in the water.
The spokesman said the efforts to reach for the remaining six corpses is going on.
