President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday renamed Abuja National Stadium after the late Chief MKO Abiola, who is nationally regarded as Nigeria’s symbol of democracy.

“Today, I propose the renaming of the Abuja National Stadium,” Buhari said this during his Democracy Day speech at the Eagle’s Square, Abuja.

“Henceforth it will be called the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.”

This announcement further reinforced the posthumous recognition of Late Moshood K. O. Abiola who won Nigeria’s June 12, 1993 presidential election,  which however, the then military junta annulled.

Buhari had before now also given posthumous award of GCON, the highest national award accorded to Nigerian Presidents to MKO Abiola.

Also, the President signed the nation’s amended public holiday Bill, which moved democracy, May 29 to June 12, every year.
