The Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Prof. Shua’ibu Shehu Aliyu, has reiterated the commitment of Staff and management of the agency to development of skilled manpower, advancing research and innovation.
He assured that the agency is not only focussed on supporting local content, and contributing to Nigeria’s energy future but extending capacity building beyond industry professionals and to other relevant stakeholders.
Prof. Shehu Aliyu who was represented by the PTDF Head, Press and External Relations, Dupe Bella Kay-Hambolu, spoke at the opening session of workshop on “Effective Journalism and Reporting in the oil and gas sector for energy Correspondents” taking place in Lagos on Monday. It was coordinated by a consulting firm, Betterways Group, led by the GMD, Dr. Victor Dare.
According to the PTDF Executive Secretary, “As the nation’s foremost human capacity development agency for the oil and gas industry, PTDF recognises that building capacity must extend beyond industry professionals to include those responsible for informing the public.
“By strengthening your understanding of the sector and of PTDF’s mandate, programmes, and interventions, we are investing in more accurate, balanced, and insightful reporting.
“Our story is one of developing skilled manpower, advancing research and innovation, supporting local content, and contributing to Nigeria’s energy future. We believe these achievements deserve to be communicated with clarity, context, and credibility.”
He explained that the training reflects the shared commitment by the Fund to promoting informed, accurate, and impactful reporting on Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
He said: “The media is far more than a conveyor of information; it is a strategic partner in shaping public discourse, promoting transparency, and driving national development.
“In an industry as technical and constantly evolving as oil and gas, effective journalism requires not only timely reporting but also a sound understanding of the policies, technologies, and issues that shape the sector. That is the purpose of this programme.
“As the nation’s foremost human capacity development agency for the oil and gas industry, PTDF recognises that building capacity must extend beyond industry professionals to include those responsible for informing the public.
“By strengthening your understanding of the sector and of PTDF’s mandate, programmes, and interventions, we are investing in more accurate, balanced, and insightful reporting.

The PTDF CEO further noted that the programme also reinforces the enduring partnership between PTDF and the media, stressing that the Fund remains committed to strengthening this relationship through continuous engagement, openness, and mutual respect.
He urged media practitioners to take full advantage of the knowledge and experience that is being shared.
On his part, the Betterways GMD, Dr. Victor Dare, noted that reporting in the energy sector is demanding and challenging.
“The sector has heterogeneous stakeholders and several subsector players, both locally and globally, making coverage and comprehensive reporting an uphill task.
“The energy sector, like any other sector, supplies news items to the press daily, and since the beginning of this present administration, when subsidy removal became a reality, the sector has had some legendary events that attracted diverse public opinion and concerns.
Consequently, he said that the workshop is designed to retool and upskill the participants to conduct highly specialized and organic reporting, achieve relevant technical knowledge of the oil and gas sector, be a public confidence builder for the industry, and be image-building ambassadors for the petroleum industry, especially the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF).
