Nigeria’s 2023 Presidency: Governor Ugwuanyi, A Metaphor For Redemption

As the permutations for the Nigeria’s 2023 Presidency hot up, the Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has been described as a metaphor for the quick-fix needed to redeem Nigeria from the clutches of insecurity and threat to true nationhood.

Speaking with our correspondent in Enugu over the weekend, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor (Party Matters), Dr. Malachy Ugwu made this known. He said that in the light of the proven technocratic prowess and democratic temperament of the Governor, Enugu state under Governor Ugwuanyi has developed a template in the last six years and counting “where we have a leadership that goes the extra miles to minimize conflict to the barest minimum, enhances social cohesion through more equitable distribution of socioeconomic gains to the people, provides safety and security to all and sundry who live in Enugu state irrespective of tribe, religion, partisanship or other persuasions, and, above all, charts an administrative course of action which gives all a sense of contentment and belonging”.

Dr. Ugwu noted that in many public functions where the Governor reflected on the problems of Nigeria, he has always identified them to include barefaced insecurity of lives and property, endangered nationhood, weak economic base, fragile democracy and good governance, heavy dependence on import and lack of mechanized agriculture.

Others, he said, consist of very poor manufacturing base, fast growing population without commensurate growth in income, mono economy dependence and negative orientation towards government business, weak public service/poor service delivery and lack of transparency and accountability towards government business, among others.

Dr. Ugwu affirmed that engendering positive change to effect a quick-fix for most of these challenges are within the core areas of the Governor’s competences.

It could be recalled that on Friday, January 21, 2022, the Enugu State Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi was given a national award as the “Most Peaceful Governor in Nigeria”, by the Messengers of Peace Foundation, a nongovernmental organization committed to a peaceful Nigeria.

Conferring the prestigious national award on Governor Ugwuanyi at the Government House, Enugu, the National President of the foundation, Dr. Suleiman Onuh Adejoh, said the honour was in recognition of the governor’s zeal, steadfastness and untiring efforts in ensuring that “there is calmness in Enugu State and Nigeria by extension”.

He added: “We have taken note of these efforts because it is not ordinary. It takes somebody that has something upstairs and a man of peace to be able to use all the connections, including God, to make sure there is peace in his state”.

Earlier, the Senior Special Assistant (Party Matters), Dr. Malachy Ugwu recalled other high profile awards given to the Governor in recognition of his stellar performance in the state such as rating Enugu State under Governor Ugwuanyi as the second most advanced state in Nigeria on the Ease of Doing Business by the World Bank Group; the best state in Nigeria that judiciously utilized the federal Government’s Bailout Funds by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; listed alongside Lagos and Rivers as the only three states out of the 36 states of the federation that have fulfilled obligations to their workers (BudgIT); the fifth most competitive state in Nigeria, according to the National Competitiveness Council of Nigeria; the third most debt sustainable State in Nigeria; the first state in Nigeria to publish its Audited State Final Account for consecutive three years; and one of the twelve states in Nigeria that can survive without federal allocation

According to Dr. Ugwu, “It is against the backdrop of the above that several well-meaning Nigerians across the federation have, through courtesy visits and other various media of communications, been calling on and literally begging Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Governor of Enugu state, to please come forward and run for the Presidency of Nigeria to urgently reunite quarrelling brothers and sisters across Nigeria and positively exploit our diversity as our greatest strength”.

He added that “truly, Governor Ugwuanyi represents a metaphor for Nigeria’s redemption and greatness”.
