Nigeria to Host WAICA 2025 Education Conference on Climate Change

The Nigerian insurance market will host the 2025 Education Conference of the West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA), scheduled for October 12–15 in Lagos.

This was discloses in a statement signed by the Chairperson, Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Mrs  Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, the event which is organized  by the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) on behalf of the wider Nigerian insurance industry is expected to bring together delegates from across West Africa, including Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and other nations.

This year’s theme, “The West African Insurer in the Face of Climate Change,” will highlight how insurers can play a pivotal role in protecting communities and economies from the growing risks of climate-induced disasters.

As the global industry responds to the Paris Agreement, West African insurers are also expected to adapt by integrating environmental risk into underwriting, adopting sustainable practices, and developing inclusive products to safeguard vulnerable populations.

According to the Committee, the event will explore a wide range of issues, including climate-resilient insurance models, regulatory frameworks, innovations in digital claims processing, green underwriting, and incentives such as premium discounts for low-carbon assets and government-backed reinsurance pools.

Delegates will also examine how regional collaboration and public-private partnerships can strengthen climate response efforts across West Africa.

Among the confirmed dignitaries and speakers are Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, Commissioner for Insurance and CEO of NAICOM, who will deliver the keynote address; Mr. Bockarie Kaloko, Deputy Minister of Finance, Sierra Leone; Mr. Wole Oshin, Group Managing Director, Custodian Investments Plc; and Dr. Abiba Zakariah, Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Ghana. They will be joined by regulators, government officials, industry leaders, and development partners from across the region and beyond.

With Nigeria’s strategic position as a regional hub, its expanding insurance sector, and its commitment to sustainable development, Lagos is expected to provide an engaging backdrop for the landmark event.

The WAICA 2025 Education Conference is poised to strengthen regional cooperation while equipping insurers with tools and insights to navigate the challenges of climate change.
