New Electricity Tariff Abuse: NERC Gives DisCos April 11 Ultimatum To Effect Redress

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has given all Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) April 11, 2024 ultimatum to effect redress on the anomalies caused by them following the recent hike in electricity tariff for customers in Band A.

NERC had on Wednesday, through 2024 Supplementary multi-year tariff order hiked electricity tariff of consumers on Band A from N68 – N225 per KW/hr for electricity supply of at least 20 hours per day, adding that every other customers on Bands B- E are not affected by the new tariff.

In a statement, NERC management directed DisCos to within the timeframe, ensure that ONLY the newly approved Band A feeders listed in their April 2024 supplementary orders are maintained as band A for the purpose of vending to prepaid customers and billing for post paid customers on their networks.

NERC further directed that all DisCos  to immediately post on their websites the schedule of approved Band A feeders that have been affected by the rate review, stressing that all DisCos should set up a portal by 10th April 2024 on their website which allows all customers to check their current Bands by entering their meter or account numbers.

It also directed that all customers wrongly billed at the new rate should be refunded through energy tokens no later than Thursday 11th April 2024, and file evidence of compliance with the Commission by 12th April 2024.

NERC assured that it would monitor compliance to the directive by the DisCos.
