The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has intensified efforts to improve compliance with compulsory insurance policies by training officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, on insurance enforcement and policy verification.

The one-day training programme, held in Abuja, was designed to equip police officers with the knowledge and skills required to enforce compliance with Motor Third-Party Insurance and other compulsory insurance policies, verify genuine insurance certificates, and promote public awareness of the benefits of insurance.

The training, themed “Building a Culture of Insurance Compliance: Police as Catalysts for Protecting Lives, Property and Enhancing Public Safety,” forms part of NAICOM’s broader strategy to deepen insurance penetration and curb the use of fake insurance certificates across the country.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of NAICOM, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon said the collaboration between the commission and the Nigeria Police Force was crucial to strengthening compliance with compulsory insurance laws and protecting Nigerians against financial losses arising from unforeseen events.

He noted that public safety extends beyond crime prevention, stressing that insurance provides a critical financial safety net for individuals, families, businesses and public institutions in the event of accidents, disasters and other risks.

According to him, the partnership is expected to reduce the number of uninsured vehicles on Nigerian roads, discourage the use of fake insurance certificates, protect road users and strengthen public confidence in regulatory institutions.

Gam-Ikon said the initiative aligns with the provisions of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 and supports NAICOM’s mandate to deepen insurance penetration and improve compliance nationwide.

He added that police officers occupy a strategic position in advancing insurance compliance because of their regular interactions with motorists, business owners and members of the public.

“By promoting compliance with compulsory insurance laws, police officers contribute significantly to the protection of lives and property, reduce the financial burden arising from accidents and enhance public safety,” he said.

Participants at the training received practical sessions on the objectives and benefits of compulsory insurance, procedures for verifying insurance policies, methods of identifying genuine insurance certificates and the legal framework governing Motor Third-Party Insurance and other compulsory insurance policies.

NAICOM said the programme also provided an opportunity to strengthen collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force while encouraging officers to serve not only as enforcers of compliance but also as ambassadors for insurance awareness in their various commands.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to working with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to increase insurance awareness, improve compliance with compulsory insurance policies, combat insurance fraud and ensure the insurance industry continues to contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth and social stability.

It also urged officers of the FCT Command to champion insurance compliance by promoting insurance not merely as a legal obligation but as a critical tool for protecting lives, property, investments and livelihoods.
