In a bid to strengthen compliance with compulsory insurance laws, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have inaugurated a joint committee to drive enforcement nationwide.
This follows the Inspector General of Police’s directive that enforcement of motor vehicle insurance will commence on February 1, 2025.
The inaugural meeting of the committee was held on January 30, 2025, at NAICOM’s headquarters in Abuja.
The Commissioner for Insurance was represented by the Deputy Commissioner for Insurance, Finance and Administration, Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, while the Police team was led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mallum Maina.
The committee has been tasked with developing and implementing strategies to ensure compliance with compulsory insurance policies as mandated by the Insurance Act and other relevant laws.
It will also foster collaboration between NAICOM and the police, provide training programs for personnel of both organizations, and undertake public sensitization efforts to raise awareness about compulsory insurance requirements.
As part of its scope of work, the committee will evaluate challenges in enforcing compulsory insurance, recommend policy reforms, and establish joint enforcement protocols.
To facilitate compliance, stakeholders were referred to key enforcement tools, including the Insurance Act 2003, the Inspector General’s speech on Third-Party Motor Insurance enforcement, and the NAICOM USSD *7292# for instant insurance verification.
Additionally, policyholders can verify motor insurance certificates via www.askiid.org or purchase genuine Third-Party Motor Insurance through www.niip.ng.
With this initiative, NAICOM and the NPF are set to enhance insurance enforcement, ensuring that vehicle owners fulfill their legal obligations while promoting road safety and financial security.
