The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have entered into a partnership to enhance data protection within Nigeria’s insurance sector.

The collaboration was formalized today, November 22, 2024, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a ceremony attended by stakeholders from both agencies.

According to a statement signed by the commission, The MoU outlines a comprehensive strategy to address data protection challenges in the insurance industry.

Key objectives include training and capacity building to improve awareness and skills, establishing privacy clinics to provide guidance on data protection issues, and conducting regular compliance activities to enforce adherence to regulations.

In addition, the MoU aims to promote awareness among insurance companies about the importance of data protection and the benefits of adhering to best practices.

It also includes provisions for the development of tailored data protection guidelines to ensure insurance institutions are well-equipped to handle their responsibilities.

This initiative underscores a commitment to safeguarding the personal data of insurance policyholders while fostering trust within the sector.

NAICOM and NDPC highlighted the importance of this collaboration in strengthening consumer confidence and aligning the insurance sector with global data protection standards.

To ensure the MoU’s effective implementation, an Implementation Committee will be established. The committee will include representatives from NAICOM, NDPC, and key industry associations such as the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) and the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB).

Its primary mandate will be to monitor progress, provide guidance, and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders.

Industry experts have lauded the move as a significant milestone in the evolving landscape of Nigeria’s insurance industry, emphasizing its potential to enhance data security, improve regulatory compliance, and build stronger customer relationships.
