The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) have established a Joint Technical Committee to address aviation-related matters and other key issues.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the NAICOM office in Abuja, marking a new era of collaboration between the two regulatory bodies.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Usman Jankara, NAICOM’s Deputy Commissioner Technical, who represented the Commissioner for Insurance and CEO, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, welcomed the NCAA delegation led by Mrs. Rominiyi F. Dorcas.
He emphasized that the committee’s formation underscores the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of policyholders, contrary to misconceptions that it focuses solely on the insurance industry’s operators.
Jankara stressed that NAICOM’s core mandate is to regulate insurance practices while ensuring that the public’s interests remain a top priority.
The primary objective of the Joint Technical Committee is to strengthen protections for policyholders and third parties in the aviation sector.
The committee will play a critical role in ensuring fair compensation and indemnification for affected parties in the event of accidents or incidents.
The terms of reference for the committee include verifying insurance certificates and related documents for airline operators, affiliate agencies, and NCAA service providers, as well as providing technical support to NCAA on aviation insurance matters.
The committee will also resolve complaints from airline operators regarding insurance covers and services during periodic meetings.
Furthermore, it will offer advice to NCAA on the adequacy and validity of aviation insurance, coordinate training sessions for stakeholders, and review the minimum insurance cover requirements in the aviation sector to ensure compliance.
Mrs. Dorcas, the Deputy General Manager for Financial Health and Aviation Insurance at NCAA and leader of the NCAA delegation, pledged her team’s dedication to achieving the committee’s objectives.
She assured the stakeholders that her team would work diligently to ensure the collaboration succeeds in addressing critical aviation insurance issues.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Jankara officially inaugurated the committee, highlighting the importance of flexibility and automation in its operations.
He expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver on its mandate, citing the expertise of its members as a key factor for success.
NAICOM’s Assistant Director for Special Risk, Mr. Ajuyah Omeresan Alfred, delivered the vote of thanks, reaffirming the Commission’s unwavering commitment to fostering efficiency and effectiveness within the aviation sector.
He assured stakeholders that the collaboration between NAICOM and NCAA would help achieve sustainable progress in the industry.
