Labour Rejects FCT Administration’s Move To Prevent The May Day Celebration Held At Eagle Square

Organised Labour in Nigeria has rejected a letter from the Federal Capital Territory Administration requesting it not to make use of the popular Eagle Square for the May 1 Workers Day celebration.

The Abuja Investment and Property Limited wrote a letter to the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, informing them of the development.

At a briefing in Abuja, TUC President, Festus Osifo on behalf of the Labour movement said the workers will not accept the old parade ground as an alternative venue as they will rather occupy the streets of Abuja instead.

Osifo says the letter claims the May 1 Workers Day celebration if held at Eagle Square will affect preparation for May 29 presidential inauguration at the same venue.

Eagle Square had been used for the Workers Day celebration since 1999, with the exception of the 2020 edition which was cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

The Labour movement alleges the action of the FCT authorities is a political move, made as a result of Organised Labour’s affiliation with the Labour Party.
