The Department of State Services (DSS) has detained an Osun State-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan, following a pro-Palestine march organised by his group, Ta’awunu Muslimeen.

Sheikh Molaasan’s arrest followed the circulation of a viral video showing members of the group staging a demonstration in Iwo, Osun State, where they called for the freedom of Palestine.

Participants in the march were seen raising Palestinian flags and chanting religious slogans.

Ta’awunu Muslimeen, which presents itself as an organisation committed to Islamic teachings and a global Muslim course, has previously organised similar pro-Palestine activities, including a demonstration in 2018.

Security sources said the DSS action was taken to prevent a possible breach of public order and to ensure that lawful expressions of solidarity do not degenerate into activities capable of undermining national security. The presence of minors chanting fervent religious slogans during the march further heightened concerns.

Investigations into the activities of the group are ongoing, as security agencies continue to assess the intent and scope of the protest.

The DSS has reassured residents of Osun State and the general public of its commitment to maintaining peace, security and the rule of law. (THEWILL)
