Amnesty International Asks Nigerian Government To Take Action Against Statements, Actions Inciting Ethnic Hatred, Attacks

Amnesty International has warned the Nigerian government against turning their eyes away from those fuelling embers of ethnic hatred and attacks.

OPTIMUM TIMES recalled that the Kogi state Governor, Yahaya Bello and MC Oluomo have individually instigated actions against ethnic groups residing in their various domains: Kogi state and Lagos state respectively.

In Lagos in particular, MC Oluomo and Bayo Onanuga, have threatened the Igbos during and after the just concluded Presidential and Governorship elections. Their comments and actions had incited organised attacks against the Igbos.

The attacks ranged from prevention of Igbos from voting through physical attacks, voter suppression through all manners of violent means, killings, destruction and burning of Igbo assets at various locations in Lagos.

But in a tweet, the Amnesty International from at the government lukewarm attitudes towards the perpetrators and their sponsors, insisting that the government must condemn it.

According to Amnesty International, “The Nigerian authorities must urgently denounce any statements, online or otherwise, which advocate hatred or violence against a specific ethnic group.”
