AIB Records Release Of 21 Final Reports Since 2017, Set To Release Dana Airline Incident, 5 Others, April 25

The Accident Investigation Bureau has said that it has released a total of 21 Final Reports, 8 accidents, 12 serious Incident and 1 Incident (Safety Bulleting) Since 2017.

The bureau revealed that it will release, Thursday, April 25, its final reports on the MD-83 aircraft incident, operated by Dana Airlines Ltd with registration 5N-SRI which took off from Abuja to Port Harcourt, 20th February 2018 but overshot the runway on landing.

Other final reports to be released by the bureau are report on the serious incident involving an Airbus A330-223 aircraft operated by Delta airlines Inc. with registration N858NW on 13th February 2018, report on the accident involving a Cessna 208B Caravan belonging to the Ministry of Works and Transport, Taraba State with registration 5N-BMJ on 25th October 2012.

Report on the accident involving a Diamond DA40D aircraft operated by International Aviation College (IAC) with registration 5N-BRD on 25th November 2013, report on the accident involving Bristow Helicopters Nig Ltd Sikorsky S76C++ helicopter with registration 5N-BQJ on 3rd February 2016, report on the accident involving a Gulfstream 200 aircraft operated by Nestoil Ltd. with registration 5N-BTF on 20th January 2018.

The Commissioner/CEO, Accident Investigation Bureau, Engr. Akin Olateru who revealed this at the 2019 Stakeholders’ Forum held today in Lagos stated also that the Bureau has reported 13 occurrences, five accident, five serious incidents and three Incidents since 2017.

Furthermore, The commissioner, in his keynote address stated that, progresses has been made by the Bureau towards having it’s own training school and Accident Investigation courses as it has been working with the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria and Cranfield University, UK.

Olateru said “AIB has partnered Universities with material science departments on reactivating its metallurgical facilities. This will encourage research and lead to human capacity development within the country.”

“We are currently partnered with University of Lagos (UNILAG), University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and University of Lancaster.”

On Futher Improvements made by the Bereau, he added that the bereau has introduced the use of drones to assist in investigations For the purpose of Crash site assessment and hazards identification, aerial photography and mapping, guide to access difficult terrain.

Managing director of Spring Fountain, Mr. Tunde Fagbemi, in his welcome address, urged airlines to employ get the best personnel stating that the industry is more regulated than others.

“Aviation is the most regulated industry in the world, why do we need to regulate and it’s unfortunate but Ethiopian knows the need for regulation, Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier know why aviation needs to be regulated.”

Explaining the importance of the meeting, Fagbemi said “we gather because the gathering is a serious one, we are discussing the largest and perhaps the most important aspect of transportation.”

“An accident is not what needs to happen, but it is something that we need to prevent. An accident is a culmination of many little events and the most fundamental objective of AIB is safety and issuing safety recommendations for the betterment of the industry.”  he explained.
