The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has finally bowed to pressure of calls for his resignation and to face his gubernatorial ambition in Oyo state.
This follows his meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa to brief him on his performance so far as power Minister and his political ambition.
Adelabu’s media aide, Bolaji Tunji confirmed this indication in a statement , saying “In view of this development, Chief Adebayo Adelabu is expected to resign his position as Minister of Power in the coming days.”
On the timing of Adelabu’s resignation despite flouting earlier directive by the President that all political appointees with political ambition ahead of 2027 general election to resign not later than March 31, 2026, Tunji said: “The timing of his anticipated resignation reflects his commitment to addressing key sectoral challenges and ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms prior to exiting office. Notably, this includes efforts to stabilise the sector following recent declines in power generation due to gas supply constraints to power plants, ongoing pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers, as well as the need to secure the President’s approval for his intended resignation and gubernatorial aspiration in Oyo State.”
However, prior to this time, there have been barrage of calls and criticisms for the Minister to resign over worsening performance of the power sector.
