The Senate has passed the National Insurance Regulatory Commission Bill, a landmark legislation expected to strengthen the regulatory framework for Nigeria’s insurance industry and enhance oversight, transparency and accountability across the sector.
The passage of the Bill marks a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to modernise insurance regulation, deepen public confidence, attract investment and support the sustainable growth of the industry for the benefit of policyholders, operators and the broader economy.
Reacting to the development, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) commended the leadership of the Senate and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, Senator Adetokunbo Mukail Abiru, for their roles in securing the successful passage of the Bill in the Red Chamber.
The Commission described the legislation as a major step towards strengthening the institutional framework for insurance regulation in Nigeria and advancing reforms aimed at improving the stability and competitiveness of the industry.
NAICOM also acknowledged what it described as the vision, commitment and collaborative spirit demonstrated by the Senate leadership and Senator Abiru in championing reforms that will modernise insurance regulation and promote financial inclusion.
According to the Commission, the passage of the Bill underscores the importance of building a more robust regulatory environment capable of protecting policyholders, enhancing investor confidence and supporting the long-term stability of the country’s financial system.
The Commission reaffirmed its readiness to ensure the effective implementation of the provisions of the legislation once it receives presidential assent, adding that it would continue to work closely with stakeholders to position the insurance industry as a catalyst for national development.
