To mitigate the effect of yearly flooding, the Maigatari local government Jigawa state has awarded N15 million contract for the construction of drainages in the council headquarters and three villages of the area.
The action was in compliance with the directive of the state governor, Badaru Abubakar to the 27 local government chairmen to put immediate remedial measures on place to avert further loss of lives and property.
The Information Officer in charge of the council Sulaiman Daudu, made this known during an interview with OPTIMUM TIMES via phone on Tuesday.
Daudu quoted the council chairman, Uzairu Nadabo, as saying that the gesture was aimed at curtailing flood threatening communities in the area.
He explained that the chairman said the project would be executed at Maigatari Arewa, in Maigatari town, Tsinke, Zazzabau and Malam Aba villages.
The officer added that 18 villages were affected by flooding in the area, which resulted in the destruction of houses and property.
According to him, Nadabo, who sympathised with the affected communities, has directed for the compilation of a comprehensive list victims of the disaster for submission to State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for necessary action.
