FG Courts Trouble From Nigerians, Orders Prosecution Of Offenders On Twitter Ban

The Federal Government may be courting troubles from the Nigerian populace as the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has ordered for immediate prosecution of offenders and violators of its ban on Twitter operations in Nigeria

It would be recalled that following a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari which Twitter considered offensive and violation of its corporate usage rules, Twitter subsequently deleted it.

The Federal Government in reaction, banned Twitter operation in Nigeria Friday. But despite the ban, Nigerians are still tweeting on grounds of freedom of speech and information.

The ban on Twitter operations in Nigeria has generated widespread condemnation by human rights groups, civil society organizations, and the Nigerian masses.

According a statement, “Malami directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) at the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, to swing into action and commence in earnest the process of prosecution of violators of the Federal Government De-activation of opetations of Twitter in Nigeria.

“Malami directed the DPPF to liase with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, National Communication Communication (NCC) and other relevant government agencies to ensure the speedy prosecution of offenders without any further delay.”

The statement was signed by Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
