A two-week warning strike initiated by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disrupted the ongoing second semester examinations and other academic activities at the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa state.
The disruption has left students, stranded, angry and wandering around the campus. Some of the affected students were scheduled to complete their exams by Wednesday and Thursday, this week.
The Chairman of ASUU Federal University Dutse Chapter, Dr. Salim Ahmad, maintained that the union was compelled to embark on the strike due to the inconsistency and failure of successive federal governments to abide by an agreement signed in 2017.
His words, “Every teacher wants to be in the classroom, but we are always very concerned about the condition of teaching and learning,” Dr. Ahmad said. “What we have been agitating for is an improvement in the conditions of our universities, which the Federal Government promised but has failed to deliver since 2017.”
During a visit to the main campus of the institution yesterday, students, especially those from the nearby states of Kano and Bauchi were spotted moving out their luggages out of the hostels.
A first year female student, in the faculty of Basic Medical Sciences who pleaded not be identified said she was concerned about the fate of her remaining exams which were originally scheduled have ended on Thursday.
Similarly, the Chairman of ASUU at Sule Lamido University (SLU), Kafin Hausa, Dr Mustapha Hussain confirmed that the institution has joined the nationwide warning strike.
Though, students of the institution are currently on holidays having finished their examinations, the chairman, confirmed that they have suspended marking of the exams and joined the strike both as members of ASUU and out of concern for the urgent need to improve the conditions of Nigerian universities to maintain global standards.
