As the 2024 rainy season sets in, Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa state has directed the state Ministry of Environment to take proactive measures to avert repeat of flooding and its consequences which devasted the state last year .
The directive was contained in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media Affairs, Mrs. Zainab Rabo.
She quoted the governor as giving the directive during a briefing session with the Commissioner of Environment, Dr Nura Ibrahim and other officials of the ministry.
Jigawa state has been named as one of the frontline states in the northwest that had been susceptible to yearly flooding. At least no fewer than 57000 lives were lost and properties worth hundreds of millions of naira destroyed during the 2023 flood in the state.
The governor said the measures were necessary to curtail the menace of flooding which occurs yearly as well as to protect the lives and property of the citizens.
Namadi directed for the relocation of all working materials for the immediate enbankment of frontline local government areas across the state, He said a nine member committee was formed to go around and solicit for the support and cooperation of all the communities.
Dr. Ibrahim said officials of the ministry have paid assessment visits to all the front line local governmentareas with a view to identifying measures to curtail the flood.
On his part, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Abdullahi Namadi said in addition to the assessment visit, the ministry had contacted officials from the neighbouring Yobe state for collaboration in the areas of embankment from Jigawa state corridor.
