Again, PDP Trounces APC In Jigawa

Again, the opposition People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), in Jigawa state has retained its seat at the House of Representatives when its candidate Yakubu Adamu defeated the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress Dr. Magaji Da’u Aliyu in the lone re-run election on Saturday.

Declaring the result of the keenly contested election, on Saturday, the Returning Officer, Prof Ahmad Baita Garko, of the Federal University Dutse said that Adamu of PDP polled 43,053 votes, while Mr Magaji Da’u of the All Progressive Congress (APC) scored 42,544 votes.

The duo had contested for the Birnin Kudu/Buji Federal Constituency in the February 25, 2023 general election, won by Adamu, but was declared inconclusive by Election Petition Tribunal, which ordered a rerun election in eight polling units in two local government areas of the federal constituency.

The Tribunal ruling was upheld by the Appeal Tribunal sitting in Abuja.

Garko explained that votes garnered by each candidate accrued votes at the rerun election had been added to the votes scored by each candidate during the earlier elections last year in order to declare the winner of the constituency’s seat at the green chamber.

He said “I, Professor Ahmed Baita Garko, hereby certify that I’m the returning officer for the 2024 Birnin Kudu/Buji constituency rerun election, held on the 3rd of February 2024.

“That the election was contested and the candidates received the following votes; Kamalu Usaman of ADC scored 81 votes, Isa Ado of ADP scored 170 votes, Da’u Magaji Aliyu of APC Scott 42,544 votes, Ali Abdullahi Umar of NNPP scored 1,106 votes, Adamu Yakubu of PDP scored 43,053 votes and Abdullahi Buhari of SDP scored 62 votes. That Adamu Yakubu of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of law, is hereby declared winner and returned elected,” Baita said.

Reacting to his victory, Adamu expressed gratitude to the people of the eight affected polling units and the entire constituency for reaffirming their support to him.

He promised to consolidate on his previous achievements with the renewed mandate they gave him.
