At least 15 persons have lost their lives to two separate auto-crashes on Thursday at different locations in Nigeria.
While 10 passengers were burnt to death on Oyo-Ogbomoso road on Thursday, five others died in an auto-crash on the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Road and 15 others were injured on Thursday
On the Oyo-Ogbomoso road crash, the passengers were caught in a head-on collision involving a Mazda and a Toyota Hiace passenger bus and burnt beyond recognition.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ibadan.
The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Joshua Adekanye, said the incident occurred at about 5:30 am around Kilometres 12 Ijawaya on Oyo-Ogbomoso road.
He said that the buses with registration numbers LEM 963 XA and NSR 222 ZS were coming from Lagos and Nasarawa states respectively.
Adekanye said that the vehicles burst into flame immediately resulting in the burning of the occupants.
He attributed the cause of the accident to speeding and overloading.
He called on motorists to always shun night travelling, speeding and overloading, adding that the fatality would have been reduced if the drivers were not on a night journey.
On the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha road auto-crash, Five persons were killed while 15 others sustained various degrees of injuries.
Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Enugu State, Mr Joseph Toby told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu that 15 persons – 10 males and five females – were seriously injured in the accident.
He said the two vehicles involved in the crash had a head-on collision while using a single lane.
“Twenty persons were in the two commercial vehicles; the five that died were three male and two female occupants,’’ he said.
He added that the injured were taken to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu and to a private hospital on the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Expressway.
Toby said corpses of the deceased were deposited at the Colliery Hospital mortuary in Enugu.
He blamed the accident on lack of lane discipline, over-speeding and brake failure.
Eyewitnesses, however, blamed the accident on the poor state of the road which compelled many motorists to drive against traffic rather than use the failed lane of the dual-carriageway.
