Chairman of NEM Insurance Plc, Mr. Tope Smart, has commended the Nigerian Association of Insurance and Pension Editors (NAIPE) for recognizing his contributions to the insurance sector with an Award of Excellence, pledging to continue working for the growth and recognition of the industry.
Smart, who was one of five recipients of the 2025 NAIPE Award of Excellence and Stewardship, was honored for his impact not only in Nigeria but also across Africa, particularly during his tenure as President of the African Insurance Organisation (AIO). He has also previously served as Group Managing Director/CEO of NEM Insurance Plc and Chairman of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA).
Receiving the award in his office in Obanikoro, Lagos, over the weekend, Smart described the recognition as a call to further service.
“This accolade is a message for me to do more to ensure insurance takes its rightful place in national discourse,” he said. “I have a personal philosophy that what is worth doing is worth doing well. What shaped my perception was the derogatory image created by my university Head of Department, who held foreign insurers in high regard but disregarded local ones. From that moment, I resolved to make a difference, and when I joined the industry, I tried my best to change the narrative.”
Referencing the iconic NEM Insurance building on Ikorodu Road, Lagos, Smart noted with pride that it was constructed without any bank loan.
“To the glory of God, the NEM building has become the envy of others and a symbol of insurance pride,” he added.
Smart also applauded the resilience of NAIPE members and other insurance journalists in sustaining their platforms despite the tough business environment.
“Running a business is never easy. For you, especially those managing media platforms, to continue making an impact despite the challenges is commendable. I will continue to support your projects as part of our joint effort to grow the insurance industry,” he assured.
In her remarks, NAIPE Chairman, Mrs. Nkechi Naeche Esezobor, lauded Smart for his consistent support and partnership, describing the NEM building as a landmark that set new standards for the industry.
“This building was what made many insurers begin to invest in bigger office structures. Every new entrant looks to replicate what NEM did because you challenged the industry. Your efforts will never be in vain. We believe it is important to recognize people when they are alive, and your contributions to the industry deserve to be celebrated, especially in our 10th anniversary of organizing the NAIPE Annual Conference,” she said.
Also speaking, Chairman of the 2025 NAIPE Annual Conference, Mr. Roland Okoro, said Smart ticked all the boxes in the selection process.
“He is a leader whose impact speaks volumes. We urge him not to rest on his oars but to continue championing deeper insurance penetration and recognition,” Okoro stated.
The award underscores Smart’s enduring influence in Nigeria’s insurance landscape and his role in positioning the sector for greater relevance at home and abroad.
