The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has expressed deep sympathy to victims of the fire disasters that engulfed Afriland Towers and Emab Plaza in Lagos on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, leaving behind loss of lives and property.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mr. Kunle Ahmed, the umbrella body for insurance and reinsurance firms in the country said it stood in solidarity with affected individuals, families, and businesses as they grapple with the aftermath of the tragedy.
“We deeply mourn the loss of lives and property and stand in solidarity with those who are grieving and rebuilding in the aftermath of this unfortunate event. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time,” the association said.
The NIA further disclosed that some of its member companies had provided insurance covers for the affected buildings, assuring that valid claims would be duly settled in line with existing policies.
“Losses covered under valid insurance policies will be duly compensated by the respective insurance companies. The insurance industry remains committed to upholding its promise of protection and financial recovery in times of crisis,” Ahmed added.
While condoling with victims, the association also used the occasion to stress the importance of insurance as a critical tool for risk management and resilience.
It urged business owners and members of the public to embrace insurance culture, warning that unforeseen events such as the recent fires could have devastating consequences when there is no protection in place.
The Tuesday fire incidents, which broke out almost simultaneously in the commercial hubs of Victoria Island and Wuse II, sparked panic across Lagos. Emergency responders battled for hours to contain the infernos, with eyewitnesses reporting extensive damage to offices, shops, and personal belongings.
As investigations into the cause of the fires continue, the NIA said it remained committed to supporting victims and strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s insurance industry.
